Anish Kapoor's Naples metro station

Universita-LR-704x489.jpg

SEAM is now working alongside the Turner Prize-winning contemporary artist Anish Kapoor and architect AL_A on a new metro station for Naples’ Traiano district.

Amidst the land of Mount Vesuvius and Dante’s mythical entrance to the Inferno, the station’s twin entrance portals – sculpted by Kapoor – are dramatically pulled up from the ground and sunken into the earth respectively. The project activates some half-finished tunnels from a previous metro endeavour, with lead architect AL_A overseeing the station design and delivery.

Dubbed the ‘MSA station’, this much-needed infrastructure most immediately serves the Monte St Angelo complex of the city’s Federico II university.

Underground, the existing, brutal concrete shells inform the material and lighting aesthetic.
